Intro
“Without You” is a single by otom, released on May 1, 2018, built around strong chords played with a short reverse guitar effect, blending a dreamy soundscape with a heavy experimental pop feel. Within the wide and layered sound, simple but slightly forward-moving drums drive the rhythm, creating a gentle tension between float and movement. Hazy, layered vocals and soft choruses are added on top, letting a dream pop and shoegaze mood quietly sink into the song. It follows the release of “Grapes” from December 2017.

This song is a mid-tempo track built around strong chords played with a short reverse guitar effect. A slightly heavy rhythm that leans forward sets the foundation, with a deep, punchy kick shaping the overall feel of the song. Layers of hazy, whisper-like vocals are stacked on top, creating a contrast with the steady rhythm. In the chorus, drone-like guitars sway with a tape-flutter feel, adding a moment of float. Deep in the mix, reverse guitar loops fill the space and form a dense soundscape. The original version of this song appeared on the EP “The Night in the Rainbow”, recorded in 2005. For this release, the lyrics were rewritten in Japanese and the sound was rebuilt using guitars, various pedals, and a laptop. After many rounds of re-recording vocals, rearranging parts, and redoing the mastering, the process took time, but the song became one of the most personal and meaningful tracks to me.
