Lyrics

Airwaves

I Come and Stand at Every Door

The Byrds cover song written by Nâzım Hikmet

From the album “Fifth Dimension” (1966)

Intro

“Highlife” is an EP by otom, released on May 15, 2004. It features one track with a soft, whisper-like vocal, three instrumental tracks with ambient and drone elements, and a cover of a song by The Byrds. Throughout the EP, a quiet, gentle, and slightly floating atmosphere runs through the music. The opening track, “Airwaves”, is one of otom’s personal favorites and strongly reflects a drone-pop texture. Track four, “Clean”, is an alternate version of “Deep Clean”, originally included on the first album “November Morning” (2004), which was released before this EP.

Note

“Highlife” is an EP built around guitar reverb, reversed sounds, and looping phrases. Unlike typical songs that rely on drums and bass for their foundation, rhythm here is formed through repeating sounds and layering created by performance and editing. The tracks are shaped around tones that suggest ambient and drone elements, with each song using different sound placement and density. Vocals appear only on some tracks, while changes in instruments and sound texture carry the flow of the music. Rather than using dense arrangements or sharp changes, each track is constructed through a quiet buildup of sound.

1. Airwaves

“Airwaves” is the opening track of the EP. It begins with guitar phrases covered in delay and reverb, creating a soundscape with ambient and drone elements that recalls the calm image of a sunset-colored jacket. There are no drums or other rhythm instruments; the track unfolds quietly using only layered guitar phrases. As the song moves forward, a soft and intimate vocal comes in, gently blending a soothing main melody with a guitar solo. The track was written with Windy & Carl in mind.

2. Highlife

“Highlife” is the EP’s title track and an instrumental piece that begins seamlessly after “Airwaves”. Reversed guitar and drum sounds, edited and looped like fragments, form the rhythmic foundation of the track. Over this, long guitar tones with a deep and rough texture are layered, followed by a reversed piano loop. Toward the end, reversed acoustic guitar and field recordings quietly overlap, leading the music into the next track.

3. New Lost Generation

“New Lost Generation” is a short instrumental track built around shoegaze-style guitar sounds. There are no drums; acoustic guitar strums are layered with a wavering, drone-like electric guitar tone that feels like tape flutter, creating a floating sense of space. As the track continues, a looped vocal scat enters, and the mood gradually shifts into something more vague and dreamlike.

4. Clean

“Clean” is an instrumental version of “Deep Clean”, an ambient song from otom’s first album “November Morning”. While the original track is wrapped in deep reverb and floating vocals, this version stands out for its dry sound, with delay and reverb largely removed. Thick, solid Les Paul guitar phrases are layered together, while loops made from harmonics and reversed tuning fork sounds create a steady rhythm. Over time, the track gains intensity through the performance itself rather than added layers, and it closes quietly as an organ joins in.

5. I Come and Stand at Every Door

“I Come and Stand at Every Door” is positioned as a bonus track on the EP, but it keeps a sound closely related to the other tracks. It is a cover of a song from The Byrds’ 1966 album “Fifth Dimension”. Built around strummed guitar, the track features reverb-heavy, drone-like guitar sounds and vocals that feel distant and removed. This approach reshapes the song into a sound very different from the original. In the final section, long tones played with an E-Bow and layered chorus voices fade in, and the track comes to a quiet close with a requiem-like mood.

Outro

“Highlife” is an EP filled with guitar reverb and repeating phrases that shape the space. Carefully placed layers of sound create a slow and quiet sense of time. This work captures otom’s early approach just as it was, preserved in sound. Enjoy.
